Dr. Igor Smelyansky, MD is a double board-certified physician specializing in interventional pain management and neurology. Born in Odesa, Ukraine, he immigrated to the United States at the age of 18, settling in Detroit, Michigan, in 1990. Despite the challenges of adjusting to a new country, Dr. Smelyansky persevered—earning his undergraduate degree from Wayne State University and later completing his medical degree at Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1999.
He then relocated to New York City, where he completed a neurology residency at the renowned NYU Medical Center. Following this, he pursued a fellowship in electrophysiology (EMG/NCV studies) at the Hospital for Joint Diseases, an NYU-affiliated institution. In 2010, he was accepted into a competitive, ACGME-accredited Pain Management Fellowship at Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Smelyansky moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where he founded Omega Pain Management, a solo interventional pain clinic that he successfully ran for over 12 years. During that time, he performed a wide array of fluoroscopically guided procedures, including transforaminal and interlaminar epidural steroid injections, cervical and lumbar radiofrequency ablations, spinal cord stimulator trials, and peripheral nerve stimulator trials.
Recognizing it was time for a new chapter in his life, Dr. Smelyansky transitioned to join Summit Spine & Joint Centers, a rapidly growing and highly regarded pain management group based in Atlanta, Georgia. He brings his unique expertise as the physician who holds dual ABMS board certifications in both neurology and interventional pain management—a distinction that continues to set him apart in his field.
