The medical field is constantly changing. In the practice of medicine, and more specifically pain management, there’s always room for growth and improvement. Here at Summit Spine & Joint Centers, we aim to be on the forefront of innovation in every aspect of patient care.

One of our cutting-edge technologies for managing your pain is spinal cord stimulation (SCS). Here’s how this procedure helps to reduce your discomfort and even the need for pain medication.

Spinal Cord Stimulation Explained

Also known as neurostimulation, spinal cord stimulation works through a device—called a neurostimulator—that’s inserted under the skin. This device sends electrical impulses to your spine, where the signals then reach the brain before your body has a chance to register that you’re in pain.

The goal of SCS is to dramatically reduce chronic pain in the back, neck and legs, and to allow patients to reduce or eliminate reliance on pain medication.

A neurostimulator doesn’t eliminate the source of your pain but instead reduces the feeling of it; patients may feel a pleasant sensation in its place. For patients who experience pain relief from SCS, their quality of life and ability to perform daily tasks improve.

Do I Qualify for SCS?

Spinal cord stimulation is ideal for people who have tried other pain relief therapies with little to no success. Other candidates can include patients who suffer from:

  • Failed back surgery syndrome
  • Cervical & lumbar radiculitis
  • Neuropathy
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)

If you’ve tried traditional approaches to manage your pain, including pain medication, and haven’t experienced relief, or these medications negatively impact your quality of life, you could qualify for SCS at Summit Spine & Joint Centers.
