Post laminectomy syndrome, also called failed back syndrome, is the continuous and chronic pain that can develop after back or neck surgery. Failed back syndrome is not really a syndrome, but a condition of pain that resumes after a back or neck surgery. Conditions include residual or recurrent spinal disc herniation (bulging disc), persistent postoperative pressure on a spinal nerve, altered joint mobility, joint hypermobility with instability, scar tissue (fibrosis), depression, anxiety, sleeplessness and possibly spinal muscular deconditioning. Patients with diabetes, autoimmune disease or peripheral blood vessels (vascular disease) are especially prone to failed back syndrome. When you visit the pain clinic at Summit Spine & Joint Centers, we may prescribe epidural injections, nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulation, anti-inflammatory medications(NSAD), antidepressants or a combination of these treatments.
